Leavenworth’s March Events

 Just as we thought spring was here early, old man winter has returned.  For those of us who enjoy winter sports, we are doing the dance of joy for all the extra snow falling on the ski resorts & trails.  For those who were already thinking spring BBQ’s & hiking, time to dig your puffy coat back out.  Regardless of the weather, here is what is going on in Leavenworth this month.
 
Ira Finklestein’s Downtown Parade–March 3
Head downtown and be in a movie!  There will be a parade for the filming of Ira Finklestein’s Christmas.  Be downtown by 7:00 am to be an extra as a crowd watcher!
 
 
 Tree Top, Creating A Fruit Revolution Presentation & Book Signing–March 4/5
Author David Stratton will give a presentation at the library Friday night on how one man and a fruit growers coop revolutionized how fruit is utilized.  The following day he will be available for a book signing.  Friday presentation, Leavenworth Library, 7pm, FREE.  Sat, book signing, A Book For All Seasons, 1-3pm, FREE
 
 
Special Olympics Winter Games–March 4-6
The Washington State Special Olympics is being hosted this year in the Wenatchee Valley.  Events will be going on in Leavenworth, Wenatchee and Mission Ridge.  For more information and volunteer opportunities check out the Special Olympics website.
 
 
 Wine Makers Dinner, Visconti’s–March 5th
Make your reservations for a night of great food and wine.  Visconti’s will be presenting a five course meal paired with Napeequa Vintners from Plain WA.  $85/person.  Call 509.548.1213 for reservations.
 
 
Leavenworth Summer Theater Auditions–March 5/March 9-12
The auditions for Leavenworth Summer Theater have arrived.  Auditions for Children are March 5, Adults are March 9 thru12 with call backs on March 13.  I tried to find out where they are being held, but none of the websites mentioned it.  More information call: 509.548.7324 or click here.
 
 
Empty Bowls Fundraising Auction–March 5-10
The Upper Valley MEND’s annual Empty Bowls online auction starts on Sat, March 5 and goes through Thursday March 10th.  Local Artists have made beautiful bowls that are up for auction with proceeds going to the Leavenworth Community Cupboard, the local food bank.  Check out these beautiful bowls here.
 
 
Harpist Monika Stadler–March 17
The Pacific Harp Institute welcomes professional harpist Monika Stadler as their Artist-in-Residence for 2011.  Monika will perform in Canyon Wren Recital Hall at The Icicle Creek Music Center.  7:30pm.  See The Pacific Harp Institute for more information.
 
 
Dance Intensive–March 18-20
Icicle Arts presents a three day intensive dance course for beginners thru experienced dancers in all ranges of dance.  The course will be held at Canyon Wren Recital Hall at the Icicle Creek Music Center. $295/Day Students; $495/Overnight.
 
 Jean Mann & Bill Corral–March 18
Leavenworth Coffee House presents favorites Jean Mann & Bill Corral for an evening in of indie/folk/pop music.  Concert is at Barn Beach Reserve, $3 Cover, 7:30pm.
A Book For All Seasons 19th Anniversary–March 19
Head over to A Book for All Season’s  Anniversary party.  There will be four authors making an appearance, games, giveaways and refreshments.  Also, 10% of all sales will go to help the Leavenworth food bank and the local schools.  11am-4pm, FREE
 
 
“The Age Of Stupid”-Films in the Barn Series–March 19th
Take a fast forward to the year 2055, where Oscar nominate Pete Postlewhwaite portrays an old man wondering at the destruction the human race has caused.  Through this looking glass, real scenes of environmental degradation are viewed.  This is award nominated film has won great acclaim from around the world.   2pm & 7pm, FREE
 
 
Crossing the Gates of Alaska Presentation & Book Signing–March 25/26.
David Metzmakesa 600 mile trek across the Alaska Wilderness with his two Airdale Terriers.  Come join him for an evening presentation at Barn Beach Reserve and a book signing the following day at A Book For All Seasons.  Friday night presentation, Barn Beach Reserve 7pm, FREE.  Sat book signing, A Book For All Seasons  1-3pm, FREE
 
 
Sven/Glen Telemark Race–March 26/27
Head to Stevens Pass for two telemark races.  The Sven race is set up in the Tye Bowl, and the Glen race is a Giant Slalom.  Novices are welcome. Check out the Stevens Pass website for more details.
 
59er Diner Celebrity Fundraiser–March 31
Want to watch the Mayor sling hash?  Or have The Royal Lady take your order?  Come to the 59er Diner on Thursday, March 31 between 3-8pm.  Proceeds go to the Upper Valley Historical Society.
