Leavenworth’s January Events
Happy New Year! We hope you had a great holiday and are looking forward to 2011. While the spectacular but crazy Christmas Lighting festival is over in Leavenworth, there are still a lot of activities happening this month. Wax up your skis and strap on your snowshoes!
6th Annual Piano Festival–Jan 6-9
While the festival is a work shop for pre-professional young artists, there are performances open to the public at the Wren Canyon Recital Hall. Visit www.icicle.org for concert times.
Ski Jump Tournament–Jan 8th
Have previous experience ski jumping or do you just like to watch? Head over to Ski Hill on Jan 8th as the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club holds the 81st Leavenworth Ski Jump Tournament.
Winter Life Snowshoeing Tours–Jan 9 through Feb 28
Enjoy a guided snowshoe tour at the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery every Sat & Sun from 10am-12pm. The tours are free and snowshoes are provided. Reservations required–call 509.548.2921. Group size limited to 12 and kids must be 8 years or older.
Ski For Health Day–Jan 9
Thinking about cross country skiing but have never tried it? Trying to figure out which x-c gear to buy? Head over to the Icicle River Trail by the Fish Hatchery for a free trial! There will be lots of new gear, free lessons and ski passes, and snacks. Noon to 3pm. Sponsored by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club.
28th Annual Bavarian Ice Festival–Jan 15-16th
Leavenworth’s first festival of the year! There are a number of events going on throughout the weekend with competitions and games, dog sled rides, and great ice sculptures. There is a little bit for everybody.
KOHO’s Chili Cookoff–Jan 15
As part of the Bavarian Ice Festival, the reigning chili champion, Damion Browne of Schocolat, will chili it up against other area pros! Event starts at 12pm at Ski Hill. Get there early for a little tubing or x-c skiing and sign up to be a chili taster!
Skirennen Citizens Race–Jan 15
Leavenworth Winter Sports Club hosts its annual Skirennen Citizen Race at the Leavenworth Golf Course ski trails. There are races for the whole family including a Fun K, 2K, and 10K. Register online up until 1pm Friday Jan 14, or the day of the race at 8am.
Snowshoe Demo–Jan 16
As part of Ice Festival, Leavenworth Winter Sports Club is offering a snowshoe demo from 10am to 2pm at the Ski Hill. In addition, relay races will begin at half past every hour.
Empty Bowls Painting Days–Jan 21-26
Come join one of Leavenworth’s most loved community service projects. Empty Bowls helps raise money for the local food bank. Participants get to choose a hand thrown bowl to paint. The bowl will then be fired and returned to the artist to be used at a community dinner. This year painting will be held at Sleeping Lady Resort. Painting times vary so please check the website. $12/bowl & soup supper March 10th.
Community Movie Night–Jan 21
Leavenworth Winter Sports Club will be showing a movie, having raffles and more. Free at the Festhalle. 7pm-9pm.
Nissebakken Telemark Race–Jan 28th
Calling all Telemark Skiers! Young, old, good, bad – head over to the Ski Hill for a two run slalom race. BBQ and awards to follow, including a special prize for the best traditional nordic outfit! Registration 5pm-5:30pm, race begins at 6pm.
Bavarian Cup–Jan 29-30
A two day Nordic Race event in both skate and classic skiing. All age groups are welcome and encouraged to race both days. Register online until Jan 26th to avoid a late fee. Hosted by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club.

Women’s 8km Nordic Tour, skate or classic, with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research . Register by Jan 21 to receive the event t-shirt.
Hog Loppet–Feb 26th (Sponsored by us here at IcicleCreekHomes.com )
30km ski tour from Mission Ridge to Blewett Pass. Early registration for this tour is through Feb 8th. Also, sign up for the shuttle bus. Party at the Festhalle in Leavenworth following the tour.
