Icicle Creek Road – Forest Service Update

Icicle Creek Road in Leavenworth was severely damaged last Spring by floods at the upper end of the valley.

Icicle Road Flood Damage

Here is the latest from the local U.S. Forest Service office:

March 2009 Update on the status of Icicle Road #7600:

The upper end of Icicle Road #7600 received damage from the 2008 debris slides that blocked Icicle Creek in two places. Water was forced out of the creek channel by the debris, taking the path of least resistance and leaving extensive damage. When the waters receded, left behind were massive rocky debris and total obliteration of at least 1/2 mile of the Icicle roadbed. There are additional slides/washouts that occurred this winter (2008-2009), but until snowmelt occurs, we won’t have a final assessment on road and campground damage in the upper Icicle Valley.

The upper portion of Icicle Road #7600 remains closed to all motorized vehicles. Three developed campgrounds (Blackpine, Chatter Creek and Rock Island) will remain closed in 2009. Five other developed campgrounds in the lower Icicle Valley are open to use and the road is accessible by vehicle to Ida Creek campground. A parking area was developed for vehicles and is located just beyond Ida Creek campground for those who want to access the upper Icicle trails by foot, mountain bike, or with stock animals.

Because of the severity of damage and Icicle Creek now occupying the old road alignment, Wenatchee River Ranger District will examine a proposal to move the road to higher ground, out of the flood plain and riparian areas, and safe from future flooding. The proposal will go through the NEPA process allowing the public to comment on it. The present projection is that Road surveying, planning and design could occur as early as summer of 2009, with construction in 2010. The road is projected to be open fall- 2010.”

Lake Wenatchee State Park on Mothball List ?!

According to the Wenatchee World, Lake Wenatchee State Park is one of the local parks that may be mothballed in order to save money during these fiscally challenging times.

Don't Let this Happen

Don't Let this Happen

Washington State Parks website says:

The Governor’s budget proposal, announced in December, was based on a revenue forecast that predicted a 5.7 billion revenue shortfall. The Governor’s budget, requires State Parks to take a 10 percent budget cut (approximately $10 million in general fund). More recently, the state’s revenue forecast was predicted to have a revenue gap of more than $8 billion. As the Legislature creates its budget for the Governor to sign in late spring, this greater challenge may require State Parks to make even deeper expenditure reductions that will affect parks and services. The Legislature has asked State Parks to prepare a scenario that would reduce the State Parks budget by approximately $23 million. The Legislature will adopt and the governor will sign a final budget into law in late spring, then the Commission will implement the final budget.

The Wenatchee World explains that, “Mothballing means gates would be closed and facilities such as restrooms locked up, but people could enter the areas on foot for day use..”

Temporary closure could save the state $169, 723 per year.

What closing Lake Wenatchee State Park could mean:

Ski Report – Stevens Pass, Lake Wenatchee, Leavenworth

Winter is here, Christmas is around the corner, and everyone wants to know… Is it ski season yet in Leavenworth?

It depends on who you ask.

Here is the round up of local ski areas from West to East.

Stevens Pass Ski Area

Stevens Pass opened the lifts on Thursday December 18th for the 2008-9 season. You can get current conditions and webcams at  www.stevenspass.com

Allyson and I have seasons passes at Stevens so if you see a hotdog skier dragging some long legged bumbly on telemark skis through the bumps, come say hi.

Stevens Pass Nordic Ski Center

Stevens Pass Nordic Center is opening their trails on Saturday December 20. They have 30″ as of this morning and more on the way. Generally they are open Thursday-Sunday, but all week through the holidays.

Lake Wenatchee State Park (and Kahler Glen)

I got an email from the park on Friday afternoon.

The snow is falling and it’s time to start thinking about winter recreation. As of today, Lake Wenatchee has received 22″ of very dry snow, which has settled down to the current depth of approximately 12″. The snow is too thin and dry for machine grooming at this time. We did try some limited “track packing” in the North Park today, but were occasionally catching roots and rocks (potentially damaging to the equipment) and found that the dry snow will not pack sufficiently. Until we receive more snow (forecasted for late Sunday), users can ski, snowshoe, and sled on all ungroomed surfaces.

The park is accessible, with plowed roads and open restroom facilities. Sno Park Permits will be required beginning this Saturday, December 20th.

If you want to get email reports from Lake Wenatchee State Park send a message to Mailto:EAWENA@PARKS.WA.GOV

Leavenworth Mountain Sports Club (Leavenworth Ski Hill, Fish Hatchery, et al)

The club’s Icicle River Trails  opened today with the Ski Hill opening tomorrow. The golf course still needs more snow. You can check their website for the most recent info on local ski conditions.

Mission Ridge

Mission Ridge ski area had a limited opening last weekend.  They made quite a bit of man made snow and certainly this weekend’s storm should help them open some more trails.  www.missionridge.com
